Job Title: System Administrator
Location: Syracuse, NY (On-site)
Job Type: Full-time, direct hire
Salary Range: $65,000 – $80,000 annually, depending on experience

About the Role:

A mission-driven company in the Syracuse area is seeking a System Administrator to take a lead role in the design, build, maintenance, and support of its enterprise IT systems. As the sole System Administrator on a collaborative infrastructure team, you’ll manage a broad range of core technologies, with a particular emphasis on VMware environment architecture and implementation, both on-prem and in the cloud.

This role goes beyond day-to-day maintenance. It requires someone who can assess, plan, and execute systems improvements while aligning technology delivery with the institution’s values of service and community. The right candidate will bring technical depth, autonomy, and a systematic approach to infrastructure management.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design, build, and maintain VMware infrastructure across hybrid environments (on-prem and cloud)

• Administer and optimize Windows Server environments, Active Directory, and enterprise storage

• Provide Tier 2 and Tier 3 technical support

• Lead infrastructure upgrades, system implementations, and project-based deployments

• Support endpoint management tools and automation workflows (e.g., SCCM, Group Policy, PowerShell)

• Monitor systems for performance, availability, and security; perform proactive tuning and troubleshooting

• Promote IT service management and change control best practices (e.g., ITIL)

• Document system configurations, procedures, and runbooks for continuity and knowledge sharing

• Serve as a consultative partner to peers and departments across campus

Qualifications:

Education:

• Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field

Experience:

• 2+ years of hands-on experience in a Systems Administrator or Infrastructure Engineer role

• Proven experience designing and configuring VMware environments, not just supporting them

• Comfortable operating independently in an enterprise IT environment

Technical Skills:

• Virtualization: VMware ESX 7+, Horizon View 8+ (architecture/build experience required)

• Operating Systems: Windows Server (2016+), Windows 10+, macOS, Linux

• Storage: SAN, iSCSI, DAS

• Directory Services: Active Directory, Kerberos

• Networking: Basic IP addressing, virtual switching, understanding of OSI Layers 1–3

• Infrastructure Services: DNS, DHCP, RADIUS, IIS, Apache

• Scripting/Automation: PowerShell, VBScript

• Endpoint Management: SCCM, Group Policy, VDI platforms

• Security Tools: Patch management (e.g., WSUS), firewalls, anti-malware, DLP

Certifications (Preferred):

• ITIL, VMware, Microsoft, or CompTIA certifications

Soft Skills:

• Mission-aligned mindset with a passion for helping others and contributing to a broader purpose

• Comfortable in a slower-moving, higher ed setting; adaptable and patient with process

• Proactive problem-solver with strong follow-through and communication skills

• Thrives in a collaborative environment but is capable of operating independently
