Job Title: Application Development Manager
Location: Syracuse, NY (On-site)
Job Type: Full-time, direct hire
Salary Range: $120,000 – $140,000 annually depending on experience


About the Role

The Application Development Manager is a hybrid technical and leadership role responsible for overseeing software development operations, guiding engineering staff, and ensuring the successful execution of development projects. This individual will balance hands-on technical contributions with team management—leading project planning, prioritizing initiatives, and mentoring developers to support organizational goals.

This role is critical in maintaining and enhancing custom applications and enterprise systems that enable day-to-day business operations. The manager will serve as a bridge between technical teams and senior leadership, ensuring projects align with long-term strategic goals.


Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

  • Design, develop, test, and optimize software applications using C#, SQL Server, and related frameworks.

  • Provide technical guidance on complex challenges, including code reviews and architectural decisions.

  • Actively contribute to development work, introducing new features, technologies, and practices.

  • Diagnose and resolve critical software issues and application bugs.

Project & Workstream Management

  • Oversee and prioritize a backlog of development projects and requests.

  • Assign tasks to team members based on skill sets, priorities, and workload balancing.

  • Estimate timelines and monitor progress toward delivery deadlines.

  • Partner with other departments to ensure successful deployment of systems and enhancements.

  • Contribute to the long-term development roadmap, resource planning, and strategic initiatives.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Mentor, coach, and provide constructive feedback to software engineers and team leads.

  • Conduct performance reviews and establish individual development plans.

  • Promote a collaborative, innovative, and inclusive team culture.

  • Lead team meetings and one-on-ones to review priorities, progress, and challenges.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Act as the liaison between the development team and senior leadership.

  • Translate business requirements into technical solutions with stakeholder input.

  • Collaborate with IT leadership on cross-functional initiatives including infrastructure, reporting, and analytics.

Standards, Process & Documentation

  • Ensure best practices in coding standards, security, testing, and development quality.

  • Maintain and enhance documentation, workflows, and ticketing systems.

  • Support the adoption of agile methodologies and CI/CD pipelines.


Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related discipline.

Experience

  • 5+ years of software development experience, including at least 2 years in a leadership or team lead role.

  • Proven success managing software projects and technical teams.

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency with C#, T-SQL, and Microsoft SQL Server.

  • Strong understanding of object-oriented programming and design patterns.

  • Familiarity with project management tools such as Azure DevOps.

  • Experience with reporting platforms such as Power BI.

Soft Skills

  • Excellent leadership, organizational, and communication skills.

  • Ability to mentor effectively and foster a culture of continuous improvement.

Other Requirements

  • Occasional travel to company locations.

  • Availability for rotating off-hours support when needed.
