Job Title: Facilities Electrical Engineer – Building Systems & Power Distribution
Location: On-site, Syracuse, NY
Job Type: Full-time, direct hire
Salary Range: $64,000–$123,000 annually, depending on experience

About the Role

A large organization is seeking a Facilities Electrical Engineer to support electrical infrastructure, capital projects, building renovations, and daily facility operations across a complex, multi-building campus.

The role includes electrical systems ranging from low-voltage building infrastructure through medium- and high-voltage power distribution. The Electrical Engineer will serve as an internal technical resource to project managers, architects, physical plant personnel, outside engineering consultants, contractors, and other stakeholders.

This is not primarily a production-design position. The internal Electrical Engineering team provides site knowledge, technical direction, infrastructure information, design review, and project coordination. The engineer will help ensure that individual projects are properly integrated into the broader electrical infrastructure and meet applicable standards.

The position is approximately 10% direct project management, with the remaining responsibilities divided between supporting capital and renovation projects and assisting Physical Plant with operational issues, troubleshooting, and infrastructure needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as an internal electrical engineering resource for capital projects, renovations, infrastructure upgrades, facility operations, and smaller internal projects.
  • Support major projects designed by external engineering consultants from initial scoping through design, construction, commissioning, and closeout.
  • Participate in project scoping meetings, design kickoffs, design-progress meetings, and construction coordination activities.
  • Provide consultants and project teams with accurate information regarding existing electrical infrastructure, available panels, power sources, system capacity, emergency power, and facility standards.
  • Review electrical drawings and specifications at approximately the 30%, 60%, and 90% design stages.
  • Identify incomplete or inaccurate design information, code concerns, constructability issues, infrastructure conflicts, and coordination gaps before construction.
  • Confirm that proposed designs comply with applicable electrical codes, healthcare requirements, life-safety standards, and organizational design guidelines.
  • Coordinate electrical infrastructure requirements across multiple overlapping projects to ensure systems are not designed or modified in isolation.
  • Evaluate existing electrical capacity, panels, circuits, normal power, and emergency power before renovations or new equipment installations.
  • Support physical plant personnel with complex electrical troubleshooting, technical investigations, infrastructure questions, and operational problems.
  • Develop practical engineering solutions for repairs, upgrades, equipment installations, and building-system issues.
  • Support electrical distribution systems, generators, generator load banks, switchgear, substations, fire alarm systems, emergency power, and other critical facility infrastructure.
  • Provide or direct small internal designs for projects that do not require an outside engineering consultant.
  • Determine appropriate circuits, panel locations, normal and emergency power sources, system capacity, and installation requirements for smaller facility projects.
  • Provide technical direction to internal electrical resources completing minor renovations, circuit installations, equipment connections, and infrastructure upgrades.
  • Manage selected smaller electrical projects that do not require a dedicated capital-project manager.
  • Coordinate with architects, engineers, contractors, vendors, project managers, end users, and facility personnel throughout project execution.
  • Maintain appropriate project documentation, technical comments, design-review markups, infrastructure information, and project records.
  • Support long-term electrical infrastructure planning, system modernization, campus power-distribution initiatives, and future facility-wide BIM efforts.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering required.

Experience

  • Approximately five or more years of relevant electrical engineering experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience designing or reviewing electrical systems for commercial, healthcare, academic, research, government, institutional, or other large facilities.
  • Experience with building electrical systems and power distribution in the built environment.
  • Experience evaluating existing electrical infrastructure, electrical capacity, panels, circuits, normal power, and emergency power.
  • Experience reviewing electrical drawings, specifications, construction documents, and consultant design submissions.
  • Experience coordinating with engineering consultants, architects, contractors, project managers, facility personnel, and internal stakeholders.
  • Experience supporting multiple concurrent projects in active, occupied facilities.
  • Experience with healthcare electrical systems, life-safety requirements, laboratories, universities, or other mission-critical facilities preferred.
  • Experience with an MEP, architectural-engineering, or electrical design consulting firm is particularly valuable.
  • Candidates from power generation, utility distribution, or large institutional facilities may be considered when they also have meaningful building electrical systems experience.

Technical Skills

  • Well-rounded understanding of electrical systems in commercial, institutional, or complex occupied facilities.
  • Knowledge of low-voltage, medium-voltage, and high-voltage electrical distribution systems.
  • Familiarity with switchgear, substations, transformers, electrical panels, generators, generator load banks, and emergency power systems.
  • Understanding of how power is transmitted from utility and facility distribution infrastructure into buildings, panels, equipment, and occupied spaces.
  • Ability to evaluate electrical loads, system capacity, available power sources, and infrastructure limitations.
  • Knowledge of normal power, emergency power, life-safety systems, essential electrical systems, and redundant infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of applicable electrical codes, building codes, NFPA standards, healthcare requirements, and facility design standards.
  • Ability to review electrical construction documents for accuracy, code compliance, constructability, coordination, and alignment with existing infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with fire alarm systems and electrical systems supporting critical equipment preferred.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, Revit, or BIM tools is beneficial but not required for daily design production.
  • Ability to review, navigate, or interpret consultant-produced drawings and building information models.
  • Strong computer, documentation, technical analysis, and project-coordination skills.

Certifications

  • Professional Engineer licensure preferred but not required.
