Job Title: Unix Systems Engineer III
Location: Northeast Region, United States (On-site)
Job Type: Full-time, contract
Salary Range: hourly depending on experience
About the Role:
We are seeking an experienced Unix Systems Engineer III to support and maintain enterprise-scale UNIX and Linux infrastructure environments across multiple locations. This role is responsible for advanced systems administration, operational support, deployment activities, troubleshooting, and infrastructure optimization within highly available production environments. The ideal candidate will have strong experience supporting enterprise UNIX/Linux platforms, storage technologies, networking protocols, automation, and disaster recovery initiatives.
This position participates in a 24x7x365 support model, including rotating on-call responsibilities and occasional after-hours or weekend maintenance activities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide advanced operational, deployment, maintenance, and troubleshooting support for enterprise UNIX/Linux infrastructure environments.
- Install, configure, administer, and maintain UNIX and Linux servers across distributed enterprise systems.
- Monitor system performance, availability, and capacity to ensure stability of production services.
- Lead medium to large infrastructure projects and contribute to process improvement initiatives.
- Develop and maintain technical documentation, operational standards, and support procedures.
- Serve as a subject matter expert for UNIX/Linux technologies and related infrastructure services.
- Support escalation activities and provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior administrators and contract resources.
- Collaborate with engineering and infrastructure teams to implement production-ready solutions and deployment strategies.
- Participate in disaster recovery planning, clustering implementations, performance tuning, and enterprise backup initiatives.
- Support enterprise security hardening, monitoring, patching, and compliance activities.
- Evaluate infrastructure technologies and recommend enhancements to improve reliability, scalability, and operational efficiency.
- Support interoperability and integration between UNIX/Linux and Windows server environments.
- Perform shell scripting and automation tasks to improve operational efficiency and system management.
Qualifications:
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field preferred.
- Equivalent professional experience will be considered in lieu of formal education.
Experience
- Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience supporting UNIX/Linux systems within enterprise environments.
- Strong experience administering IBM AIX, Solaris, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE Linux, and CentOS environments.
- Experience supporting enterprise web and infrastructure services including Apache and enterprise mail systems.
- Experience with enterprise storage technologies including SAN and NAS platforms.
- Experience supporting high-availability environments and clustering technologies.
- Experience participating in production support environments with on-call responsibilities.
- Experience supporting integration between UNIX/Linux and Windows-based systems preferred.
- Experience with Veritas technologies and Linux clustering solutions preferred.
- Experience with enterprise monitoring, backup, and security hardening tools preferred.
Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of TCP/IP networking and enterprise infrastructure protocols.
- Experience with NFS, DNS, LDAP/OpenLDAP, and enterprise authentication services.
- Proficiency with shell scripting and automation frameworks.
- Knowledge of enterprise internet/server protocols including SSH, SMTP, HTTP/HTTPS, TLS, FTP/SFTP, and IMAP/POP.
- Strong troubleshooting and performance tuning capabilities across UNIX/Linux environments.
- Familiarity with enterprise backup and recovery solutions.
- Working knowledge of virtualization-related infrastructure technologies.
- Perl scripting experience is a plus.
Certifications
- UNIX or Linux certifications preferred.
- Solaris Administration certifications are a plus.
